Week 2 of 6 as Site Director for SSP

As always, time is flying! The second week of campers have just left. Being a site director is a little bit different than I pictured it but nonetheless I'm definitely enjoying myself and keeping extremely busy and pretty much disconnected from the real world. Two weeks ago my cell phone decided not to turn on. I left it off for a week. Now it is turning on but some things are erased like the pictures, and some things like music and a few apps are still on the phone. An error message keeps popping up. I have a backup verizon phone to use that someone sent to me but I haven't tried to hard to connect it yet.

I'm kind of enjoying being phoneless. I was already pretty disconnected because I had terrible cell phone reception but then also because our internet is extremely slow. We have two 3g wifi hot spots among seven people means very slow, if at all any internet.

Our first week went really well. It is definitely weird to be in the position of power and having 6 little minions looking up to you constantly.. and having to remind them of things A LOT. I guess I was thinking they would be more like me when I was 19 and a cook and did everything directed and as soon as possible! I'm adjusting to that. Also adjusting to be there more for the counselors than the youth. As a site director it's a huge part of my job to make sure the adults are happy and getting what they need to make their week go well. We couldn't do this project without them. There is also a lot more bookkeeping and paperwork than one would think at SSP. I've spent a lot of hours on emails, and phone calls, and paperwork, etc. But really loving it. The community is fantastic and so welcoming. The SSP staffs that were here from 2007-2009 did an excellent job and everyone knows what we are doing here. The town is absolutely tiny but in the beautiful high desert mountains.

I don't think I blogged at all during training. Training was also absolute madness! Megan Taylor and I lead cook training. It was a lot of fun, but also helping to prepare so many meals and do so many kitchen duties for cleaning was a lot! But during the ten days the cooks learned a ton and I feel like they were extremely prepared for what they had coming! And overall it was an extremely successful 10 days of training where everyone learned a ton about youth ministry, their job, and how to create the most amazing communities that SSP creates.

The rest of my Cali trip was awesome as well! I loved San Francisco. My great friend from Elementary school let me stay at his place. He took me on an awesome walking tour of all sorts of neighborhoods. It was perfect weather for the most part. I got to meet up with Jill, a lady I played frisbee with in South Korea and play more Ultimate with her in yet another city around the world. Then during the weekend met up with her friends and saw a pro ultimate game and hung out with them for the rest of the evening. I loved that San Fran is so open and accepting of everything. While so many of my friends were busy during my visit I found some events going on online and served dinner to the homelsss. It's always fun to serve and the people were so grateful. Grant, my kindergarten boyfriend took me on a driving tour of San Fran and we had lunch at Golden Gate park. Another outing was biking across Golden Gate bridge with Jill's friend, Sam. Then I took my first ever trip on Amtrak to Sacramento for Sierra Service Project to start! It was absolutely beautiful and went along the coast and fun to see the country side north of the bay.

Lots of love to everyone all around the place!

Winter in Melbs

In the blink of an eye, it's already July. Again, it is such a strange feeling because it feels like Christmas should be any day now with the backwards seasons, days are super short, the cold, snow in the higher areas of Victoria. No better way to confuse the girl who hasn't been home for Holidays in ages and been skipping out on winters for a few years now. For a sun worshipping, desert dwelling lover, the Melbourne winter has been less than desirable. It's no Korean winter, however the rain, the cold, the wind, and super early darkness have me missing anything about warmth and summer.  Which is why I am literally counting down the days until I leave for Hawaii.. 16 more days! My family is blessed to have the opportunity to celebrate Cody's graduation from law school from the University of Arizona in May. He has already landed a full time job and will take the bar exam after our trip in Hawaii. Meeting the family in Hawaii will work out perfectly as it's as half...

Travel Tales so far in 2018

Ok onto the fun stuff! The travels of the year!  My mom came to visit for 5 weeks from the end of March until May. It was really nice to have her here to keep us company, do some gardening work, and we went on a little trip as well during her time here. In Portugal we went to Coimbra together for the day, Soito to enjoy the Senora da Granja festival, and Obidos. My mom also visited Lisbon on her own. In between her visits in Portugal we headed to Toulouse where we visited our great friends who are French but raised their girls, similar in age to myself in the Phoenix! One of their daughters lives in NY and Melissa was currently staying with her parents but kind of floating around working in sustainable fashion design. She was working on a project while we were there creating a dress from plastic bottles! I loved seeing some of her photos of her work!  Anyways, They moved back to France after Melissa graduated High School in AZ early. It was so much fun to catch ...

En Panama es Tranquila

The rest of my time in Costa Rica was awesome and a little dried than before, thank goodness! And to update you... I didn't have any problems with my ATM cards, turns out it was all of the three machines in Monteverde which apparently don't accept mastercard even though the banks say they do! Crisis averted :) I spent my birthday on a bus and a boat gtting to Montezuma. Montezuma was soo cute, and small. The atomsphere was fabulous.  I headed to the beach as soon as I arrived and met some French Canadians who were throwing a frisbee. We went out to dinner and they treated me to my bday dinner. After, I hung out with an Aussie I met in my hostel and the bar made sure to play their cheesy "feliz cumpleanos" song and some free shots of Casique.. the Costa Rican sugar cane rum.. Which is quite rough, kind of like rubbing alcohol. The days after that I enjoyed a waterfall hike with Adam, the Aussie, days on the beach, and a snorkeling tour. After Montezuma, I headed...
