More about VIPKid!

Hey Guys,
I thought I would just create a little blog post here for some of my friends thinking about VIPkid and how it all works.

VIPKid is a company based out of the US and China which teaches one on one English classes to students in China. It is a huge company with more than 20,000 teachers and over 200,000 students and continually growing! I am paid with direct deposit through my US bank account monthly. Your base wage is determined in your initial interview. I believe the base pays range from $7-9 USD per class. In addition to that, if you are on time to every class you teach during the month, you get an extra dollar per class. Then another $1 per class if you teach more than 45 classes a month! A class lasts for 25 minutes. If a class is booked within 24 hours, you get an extra $2 on top of all the others. If a student who is enrolled in the program doesn't show up you still get your full pay. If the student is a trial, or someone just seeing what VIPkid is like, you earn half pay. If you get a trial to sign up for the program, you get $5.  I think that is it for the money scene!

You choose your own schedule and open whatever time slots you would like. Then one week before, the parents book the teachers they want and the classes for their kids. That is what determines your schedule. If you don't want to work a week, are going on vacation, or whatever, you just don't open time slots, simple as that. There is an intense cancellation policy, if you open a slot, a class is booked then something comes up, the company is strict. In a six month contract you can have no more than 6 cancellations.. Basically don't open a slot if you aren't positive that you can work. If it turns out that later on you can, great, open it then! But you don't want to have to use your cancellations for silly reasons.

The curriculum and stuff you have to teach is all prepared for you. You just review the powerpoint before class, and write some feedback after class.  Parents can then rate your class with apples! Your apple rating is super important to keep the number up to get bookings. The company does do a great job reviewing parent feedback if you felt a review was unfair. I have had 2/2 which I requested a review over turned. You can watch all of your classes about six hours after they finish to review how you are teaching. Parents and tech support are also able to jump into the classroom while you are teaching at any time.

I started in late July! I will be honest here, it took me more than two months to get my schedule fully booked how I have it now. People say that how long it takes to get booked is completely random. But now that I have a good amount of experience, a good apple rating, and a few regular students I am happy with how much I am teaching. Lucky for me in Portugal, the busiest hours are Chinese evening time, which for me is day time. I open time slots from 8-2. I don't always have each time slot booked but usually have between 8-11 classes a day. I don't mind teaching the classes back to back, but writing feedback at the end of the day and remembering how Kevin did or how Jonny did can get difficult.  However, I am really enjoying the job so far! It is really different than being inside of a normal classroom but the one on one interaction is really neat. It's also interesting to see the dynamic of how students behave in their own home versus the classroom. I hardly have any behavior problems. For my younger students (3-6) mom or dad is supposed to be sitting with them and helping them through the class so that is really helpful or I'm not sure I could make it through class with them running around the room, and me "Come back to your tablet!".

I'm really impressed with the company so far and how they handle any queries so quickly and have great organization. If you have any other questions about VIPkid feel free to reach out, or if  you know of anyone who may be an interested in applying, please send them my way! An applicant needs a solid internet connection, a computer and mouse. Experience wise, they need any sort of teaching experience, including tutoring, Sunday school, or school teachers plus a college degree. They must also be from either Canada or the US.

Winter in Melbs

In the blink of an eye, it's already July. Again, it is such a strange feeling because it feels like Christmas should be any day now with the backwards seasons, days are super short, the cold, snow in the higher areas of Victoria. No better way to confuse the girl who hasn't been home for Holidays in ages and been skipping out on winters for a few years now. For a sun worshipping, desert dwelling lover, the Melbourne winter has been less than desirable. It's no Korean winter, however the rain, the cold, the wind, and super early darkness have me missing anything about warmth and summer.  Which is why I am literally counting down the days until I leave for Hawaii.. 16 more days! My family is blessed to have the opportunity to celebrate Cody's graduation from law school from the University of Arizona in May. He has already landed a full time job and will take the bar exam after our trip in Hawaii. Meeting the family in Hawaii will work out perfectly as it's as half...

Travel Tales so far in 2018

Ok onto the fun stuff! The travels of the year!  My mom came to visit for 5 weeks from the end of March until May. It was really nice to have her here to keep us company, do some gardening work, and we went on a little trip as well during her time here. In Portugal we went to Coimbra together for the day, Soito to enjoy the Senora da Granja festival, and Obidos. My mom also visited Lisbon on her own. In between her visits in Portugal we headed to Toulouse where we visited our great friends who are French but raised their girls, similar in age to myself in the Phoenix! One of their daughters lives in NY and Melissa was currently staying with her parents but kind of floating around working in sustainable fashion design. She was working on a project while we were there creating a dress from plastic bottles! I loved seeing some of her photos of her work!  Anyways, They moved back to France after Melissa graduated High School in AZ early. It was so much fun to catch ...

En Panama es Tranquila

The rest of my time in Costa Rica was awesome and a little dried than before, thank goodness! And to update you... I didn't have any problems with my ATM cards, turns out it was all of the three machines in Monteverde which apparently don't accept mastercard even though the banks say they do! Crisis averted :) I spent my birthday on a bus and a boat gtting to Montezuma. Montezuma was soo cute, and small. The atomsphere was fabulous.  I headed to the beach as soon as I arrived and met some French Canadians who were throwing a frisbee. We went out to dinner and they treated me to my bday dinner. After, I hung out with an Aussie I met in my hostel and the bar made sure to play their cheesy "feliz cumpleanos" song and some free shots of Casique.. the Costa Rican sugar cane rum.. Which is quite rough, kind of like rubbing alcohol. The days after that I enjoyed a waterfall hike with Adam, the Aussie, days on the beach, and a snorkeling tour. After Montezuma, I headed...
