Countdown to the BIG O-N-E

Feb 24-  How is it possible?! Luke is 4.5 weeks away from turning one! :O   I feel like things are changing every single day so it was important to write some funny stories and remember all of the funny things he is up to these days!

He has been able to pull himself up to standing position for some time, but now is really getting more and more confident in his walking each day. One week he didn't understand at all the point of the toy walker was. When we placed his hands on it and encouraged him to start walking, he just leaned forward to play with the front of it.. Now when he is in the right mood, he takes off!! Before he understood the concept of walking in with the walker, he was holding on to the back of his little race car and walking with the help of that. He can stand up and balance for 10-15 seconds.   Though he still isn't crawling, he has figured out how to scoot himself around. Like crawling where he has one knee on the floor, and will push off with the other foot.. He also will try to stand up, but then becomes afraid and starts walking around in bear crawl position! It's so cute.

He is so interactive, it's amazing! We love to follow and copy his movements, and then other times he loves to follow and imitate us! He loves to blow tons of spit bubbles, babble all sorts of sounds, it seems like he genuinely understands mama/papa. He also figured out how to wave recently and it is the cutest!!  He is starting to have more and more opinions about eating time and will start to lift up his plate when he is finished eating. He is also getting cheeky with Mel, and will hold his hand to the side of his chair to give her a little tease and then shove it in his mouth. Other times, if it's something he doesn't like, like broccoli he gives her a treat. He still loves almost all of the different foods we give him. He has now completed his first 100 ingredients!! I had fun trying to add variety to give him the opportunity to reach 100 and can't wait to keep going! We tried the grain Bulgur, and made a bulgur pilaf which was really tasty, though a mess to clean from him! It is kinda similar to quinoa. In the future I will add it into chilly and definitely hoping to try more recipes with it! It has also been a fun challenge to make things sugar free for Luke but still taste good for Joel and I.   It's amazing to think about the "chef" I have become, especially thinking back on my hamburger helper days and my obsession with the blue box of mac and cheese.. I wish I had spent more time cooking with my mom and grandma when I was growing up.

He still has no teeth but both Joel and I got our teeth in late so we aren't surprised with that. He loves to watch us vacuum or watch the robot vacuum. He does little dances when he hears music, or sometimes twerks while he is in a bear crawl position.

March 2- He has taken a few steps on his own now when he was too distracted to realize he wasn't holding on to something. He likes to put his mouth on the front window and then make his way over to the TV, but sometimes he just can't wait to get there and has taken those few little steps. I imagine it won't be long now, but now that he has perfected his little scoot, maybe he will take more time to walk. Long gone are the days where I can leave him in his room playing with some toys while I make my breakfast. Now he leaves his toys to come and find me for his breakfast! I will try to start feeding him three meals a day to help him transition to eating a full day of meals and snacks at one. It's seems a bit overwhelming, even though he is just eating what we eat, I need to start adjusting my cooking sizes to accommodate for all three of us and plenty of leftovers. Depending on the meal, he can also get pretty messy despite his long sleeved bib.

I can't believe that I am shopping for shoes and thinking about his first birthday already... I know I say it like a broken record, but seriously where does the time go?

After Christmas Portugal got really bad as far as covid cases go and we had a semi lock down (kids still going to school) which wasn't helping the numbers, so then we went back to a full on lock down like last year. Numbers were crazy, Portugal was worst in the world for some time, and finally things are calming down. We still can't do anything or go anywhere besides the supermarket but I hope.... we will be able to make that trip across the pond very very soon.

We enjoyed some extra time with Joel in February as he had to take his unused holidays from last year. We hoped to spend some time in Algarve but due to the intense lock down we couldn't go. Joel did some projects, and I taught some extra classes.

Here are some recent photos to enjoy! :)

Winter in Melbs

In the blink of an eye, it's already July. Again, it is such a strange feeling because it feels like Christmas should be any day now with the backwards seasons, days are super short, the cold, snow in the higher areas of Victoria. No better way to confuse the girl who hasn't been home for Holidays in ages and been skipping out on winters for a few years now. For a sun worshipping, desert dwelling lover, the Melbourne winter has been less than desirable. It's no Korean winter, however the rain, the cold, the wind, and super early darkness have me missing anything about warmth and summer.  Which is why I am literally counting down the days until I leave for Hawaii.. 16 more days! My family is blessed to have the opportunity to celebrate Cody's graduation from law school from the University of Arizona in May. He has already landed a full time job and will take the bar exam after our trip in Hawaii. Meeting the family in Hawaii will work out perfectly as it's as half...

Travel Tales so far in 2018

Ok onto the fun stuff! The travels of the year!  My mom came to visit for 5 weeks from the end of March until May. It was really nice to have her here to keep us company, do some gardening work, and we went on a little trip as well during her time here. In Portugal we went to Coimbra together for the day, Soito to enjoy the Senora da Granja festival, and Obidos. My mom also visited Lisbon on her own. In between her visits in Portugal we headed to Toulouse where we visited our great friends who are French but raised their girls, similar in age to myself in the Phoenix! One of their daughters lives in NY and Melissa was currently staying with her parents but kind of floating around working in sustainable fashion design. She was working on a project while we were there creating a dress from plastic bottles! I loved seeing some of her photos of her work!  Anyways, They moved back to France after Melissa graduated High School in AZ early. It was so much fun to catch ...

En Panama es Tranquila

The rest of my time in Costa Rica was awesome and a little dried than before, thank goodness! And to update you... I didn't have any problems with my ATM cards, turns out it was all of the three machines in Monteverde which apparently don't accept mastercard even though the banks say they do! Crisis averted :) I spent my birthday on a bus and a boat gtting to Montezuma. Montezuma was soo cute, and small. The atomsphere was fabulous.  I headed to the beach as soon as I arrived and met some French Canadians who were throwing a frisbee. We went out to dinner and they treated me to my bday dinner. After, I hung out with an Aussie I met in my hostel and the bar made sure to play their cheesy "feliz cumpleanos" song and some free shots of Casique.. the Costa Rican sugar cane rum.. Which is quite rough, kind of like rubbing alcohol. The days after that I enjoyed a waterfall hike with Adam, the Aussie, days on the beach, and a snorkeling tour. After Montezuma, I headed...
